Looking up a palm tree trunk wrapped in warm white string lights toward its fronds

Solar palm tree lights work for a warm-climate Christmas when the panel gets direct sun, and they suit the South better than the North. Miami has about 10.5 hours of daylight on December 21, which gives a panel more charging time than northern yards get. Choose a lighted solar palm, or wrap a real palm with a solar string.

Palm trees are a festive centerpiece from Florida to Southern California, and solar takes the extension cord off the lawn. This page covers the two ways to do it, where to put the panel and how to hang lights on a real palm safely. Why solar palm tree lights do better in warm climates

Solar palm tree lights charge from the same winter sun as any other solar Christmas light, and that sun is weakest in December. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that Denver gets nearly three times more solar energy in June than in December. EnergySage adds that solar Christmas lights run about 8 to 14 hours on a full charge, and less after cloudy days.

Latitude helps palm country. According to timeanddate.com, Miami has about 10 hours 31 minutes of daylight on December 21. WDIO, a Duluth TV station, notes that the Canadian border gets closer to 8 hours between sunrise and sunset on the shortest day, about two and a half hours less than Key West. More daylight hours mean more charging time, though cloud cover still matters more than the map. Our page on whether solar Christmas lights work in winter explains the winter limits in detail.

Lighted solar palm trees vs a wrapped real palm

Solar palm tree lights come in two forms, and they suit different yards.

Option What it is Best for What to check
Lighted artificial palm A freestanding faux palm with LEDs on the trunk and fronds and its own solar panel Patios, pool decks, yards with no real palm Height, LED count, panel lead length, base or stakes
Solar string lights on a real palm A solar string or tree-wrap set wound around the trunk, sometimes run along the fronds Mature palms already in the yard String length for your trunk, a panel stake you can place in open sun

Home Depot has listed solar versions of Lightshare’s lighted palms: a 7-foot single-trunk tree with 96 LEDs and a 7-foot three-trunk tree with 218 LEDs. Both showed as out of stock in October 2026, so treat them as examples of the type rather than a shopping list. Listings for lighted palms vary widely on how much they tell you, so look for a stated battery capacity, run time and water rating before you buy. Our guide to waterproof solar Christmas lights explains what IP44 and IP65 mean on a label.

How to light a real palm tree with solar string lights

Lighting a real palm tree with solar string lights starts at the trunk. Christmas Lights, Etc, a lighting retailer, says a palm trunk is wrapped much the same way as any other tree trunk: start at the base and keep the lights tight as you wind up. It advises against stapling lights to the tree. Begin at the base, nearest the panel, so the lead wire reaches.

For the fronds, the same retailer says the most common method is to run a string down the center of each frond and secure it with twist ties or zip ties every few inches. It adds that lighting the fronds closest to the trunk is enough for a strong display, and suggests a professional installer for a fully lit canopy or very tall fronds.

Lighting the trunk alone, with tight wraps from base to crown, already makes a strong display.

Three rules keep the setup tidy and safe:

  1. No nails or tacks. The CPSC advises fastening outdoor lights securely with insulated staples or hooks, never nails or tacks. On a palm, ties around the trunk and fronds do the job without piercing the tree.
  2. Outdoor-rated lights only. The CPSC advises checking labels for outdoor certification and using lights tested by a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as UL or ETL.
  3. Ladder care for tall trunks. CPSC’s ladder tips include placing the ladder on level, firm ground and having a helper hold the bottom. If the fronds sit high, light the trunk only and leave the canopy dark.

Tip

Measure the trunk before you buy. The trunk’s circumference times the number of turns you want gives a rough string length; compare it with the lit length on the listing, not the total length including the lead wire.

Where to put the panel for solar palm tree lights

The panel placement for solar palm tree lights decides how long they glow. A palm’s own canopy throws shade, so a panel clipped to the trunk under the fronds may charge poorly. Put the panel on its stake in open ground, facing south, where it sees the midday sun.

Other placement points:

  • Keep the panel clear of pool screens, roof overhangs and hedges, which shade it in the low December sun.
  • Wipe dust, pollen and sprinkler spots off the panel when you see them, since anything on the surface cuts the charge.
  • Give the set a full first charge on a sunny day before the first night.

Our step-by-step guide to installing solar Christmas lights covers panel angle and first charge in more detail.

Warm white or multicolor on a palm tree

Warm white or multicolor on a palm tree is a matter of style, and both work. Christmas Lights, Etc describes lighted faux palms with warm white lights on the trunk and green LEDs in the fronds, a mix that echoes the palm’s own colors; all warm white reads as quieter, and multicolor in the fronds reads as more festive. Our comparison of warm white vs multicolor solar lights covers how each looks on a tree at night, and the solar Christmas tree lights guide covers wraps for other outdoor trees.

Frequently asked questions

Do solar palm tree lights work in winter?

Yes, in a spot with direct midday sun, and they work best in the southern states, where December days are longer. Expect shorter run times after cloudy days, as with any solar light.

Can you put Christmas lights on a real palm tree?

Yes. Christmas Lights, Etc, a lighting retailer, says a palm trunk is wrapped the same way as any other tree trunk, and fronds are lit by running a string down the center of each frond. The CPSC advises insulated staples or hooks rather than nails or tacks for light strings.

Where should the solar panel go on a palm tree light?

Put the panel where it gets the most direct sun in December, usually on a stake in open ground on the south side. Palm fronds and the trunk itself can shade a panel mounted close to the tree.

Are there solar lighted artificial palm trees?

Yes. Home Depot has listed solar versions of Lightshare's 7-foot lighted palm trees, including a single-trunk tree with 96 LEDs and a three-trunk tree with 218 LEDs, though both showed as out of stock in October 2026. Check any listing for the panel, battery and run time before you buy.
