Solar Christmas Tree Lights for Outdoor Trees: How to Choose

Solar Christmas tree lights work best on outdoor trees when three things line up: enough lit length to wrap the trunk and branches, a panel lead long enough to reach full sun, and a modest LED count per panel. Plan the length first, then check the lead cord and waterproof rating before you buy.

What matters most in solar tree lights

Five specs decide whether a solar set will look right on a tree:

1. Lit length. The part of the string that has bulbs, not the total including the lead cord.
2. Lead cord length. The unlit wire between the panel and the first bulb. It sets how far the panel can sit from the tree.
3. LEDs per panel. More bulbs on one small panel and battery means dimmer light or shorter run time.
4. Waterproof rating. An IP number tells you what the lights and panel are sealed against.
5. Stated charge and run time. These are the maker’s figures in good sun, so treat them as a best case.

Mode count matters less. Most sets list eight modes, with steady on being the one most people leave running.

How many feet of lights does an outdoor tree need?

For trunks and branches, Christmas Lights, Etc gives a simple formula: divide the height by the spacing between wraps, then multiply by the circumference. Its example is a 4-foot trunk measuring 2 feet around, wrapped every 3 inches, which needs about 32 feet of lights.

Davey Tree, a tree care company, describes wraps spaced about 2 to 3 inches apart for a trunk. Wider spacing uses fewer lights but shows more gaps from the street.

Here is how the formula plays out with a 3-inch wrap spacing:

Branches add up fast. Measure each branch you want to wrap the same way and add it to the total.

For a small evergreen in a pot, the same site suggests at least 100 lights per vertical foot for indoor trees. Outdoor trees viewed from a distance can look fine with less, so that figure is an upper guide, not a rule.

Where should the solar panel go?

The panel matters more than the lights. Environmental Lights, which sells a commercial solar Christmas light kit, tells buyers to face the panel south at a 20 to 30 degree angle. Its manual calls for at least 8 hours of direct sun each day for a full charge.

Trees make this hard, because the tree itself casts shade. Use the lead cord to move the panel into open sun. As one example, Janchs lists a 16.4-foot lead cord on its 304-LED solar icicle set, separate from 23 feet of lit wire.

Keep the panel away from porch lights and streetlights too. Lights4fun notes that nearby street or security lighting can interfere with the daylight sensor that switches solar lights on at dusk.

Which type of solar string suits which tree?

Fairy lights on copper wire for small trees and branches

Thin copper or silver wire bends around small branches and potted evergreens. Brightown’s 33-foot set, for example, lists 100 LEDs, an IP65 rating, a 4 to 6 hour charge and 8 to 10 hours of light after a full charge. That length suits a small tree or a few branches, not a large trunk.

Heavier strings for trunks

Trunk wraps need more length and more LEDs. Environmental Lights’ manual shows why that is a challenge for solar: its panel supports up to 800 LEDs per branch, but the maker recommends 400 or fewer to avoid dim bulbs. For big trees, plan on two or more sets, each with its own panel.

Star strings for a festive look

Star-shaped bulbs read clearly from the street on bare branches. Quntis lists its solar star strings in 12.47, 22.94 and 32-foot lengths with a 600 mAh battery, an 8 to 10 hour charge and 8 to 10 hours of run time.

What do IP65 and IP44 mean on tree lights?

The IP code has two digits: the first for dust, the second for water. According to LINAK’s summary of the standard, a 6 first digit means dust tight, and a 5 second digit means protection against water jets. A 4 in the second place covers only splashing water.

Is it safe to wrap lights around a tree?

Davey Tree lists a few rules worth following. Skip young, newly planted, weak or damaged trees. Remove tree guards or burlap wraps first. Wrap branches snugly, and secure the ends with twine or electrical tape.

Read the full listing before you buy. Look for the lit length and the lead length stated separately, the IP rating, and the battery type. New, sealed sets are the safer choice for solar, because a used battery may already be worn. Check seller feedback and the return window, since you will not know if a set holds a charge until it has sat in the sun for a day.
