Solar Christmas Lights for Balconies and Apartments

Solar Christmas lights work on a balcony if the panel gets a few hours of direct sun. South-facing balconies do best; east and west can work; north-facing balconies rarely charge well in December. Mount the panel on the railing in open sky, not behind glass, and hang the string with clips. No outlet or extension cord is needed.

Balconies make solar lights both easier and harder. Easier, because there is no cord to run through a sliding door. Harder, because you often have one direction of sky, a ceiling overhead and walls on both sides. Here is how to work out whether your balcony gets enough light, and what to buy if it does. Will solar lights work on my balcony?

Start with the direction your balcony faces. The Department of Energy notes that solar panels generally perform best facing south, and winter makes that matter more. DOE data shows Denver receives nearly three times more solar energy in June than in December, because winter rays are lower and more slanted.

Then check what blocks the sky. A balcony above yours, a deep overhang or a neighboring building can shade the panel for most of the day even on a south-facing balcony. Stand where the panel would go at noon and look up. If you cannot see open sky, the panel will struggle.

Where to put the panel on a balcony

On the railing

This is usually the best spot. Clamp or zip-tie the panel’s bracket to the outside of the top rail, tilted toward the sun. Keep it clear of the ceiling’s shadow line.

In a planter

If your set has a ground stake, a deep planter at the sunny edge of the balcony can hold it. Raise the planter if the railing shades the lower half of the panel.

Behind a window (last resort)

PowerFilm Solar, a solar panel maker, reports that south-facing windows can approach outdoor output under ideal conditions, but east- and north-facing windows often drop to 7 to 15% of outdoor output. It adds that Low-E coatings on modern windows cut the light panels depend on. A panel on an inside windowsill will usually run the lights for a much shorter time.

Which solar Christmas lights fit a balcony?

Small spaces reward sets that cover a lot of area from one panel:

• String lights along the railing. The simplest option. Measure the railing first so the string runs the full length without bunching.

Rules and safety for apartment balconies

Before you buy, check your lease or building rules on attaching things to railings or exterior walls. These vary by building, and some limit what can hang outside. Solar sets avoid one common complaint: an extension cord run through a door or window.

Two CPSC tips apply directly:

1. Buy lights certified for outdoor use and tested by a nationally recognized laboratory such as UL or ETL. Check the label.
2. Do not use nails or tacks. The CPSC advises insulated staples or running strings through hooks. On a balcony, plastic clips or zip ties do the same job without marking the railing.
