Solar Christmas Lights with Remote and Timer: How the Modes Work

Solar Christmas lights with a timer turn on at dusk as usual, then switch off after a set number of hours, often 6, 8 or 10, or 3, 5 or 8. How do timers on solar lights work?

A solar light already has one control: a light sensor in the panel. It turns the lights on when it gets dark and off when it gets light. Environmental Lights’ controller, for example, turns on below 100 lux and off above 500 lux.

A timer adds a second limit. The manuals we reviewed describe two designs.

Selectable shut-off timer. You choose how many hours the lights stay on after dusk. On The Solar Centre’s fairy lights, one press of the Timer button sets 6 hours (the lights flash twice to confirm), two presses set 8 hours and three set 10 hours. The setting repeats every night until you cancel it. Mimigogo lists 3, 5 and 8 hour options on its remote-controlled solar string lights.

Fixed cycle. Environmental Lights’ solar controller keeps lights on for 6 hours, then off for 18 hours, and repeats as long as the light conditions are met.

In both cases, the timer counts from when the lights come on. Neither is a clock, so you cannot set “on at 5, off at 11.”

Why use a timer on solar lights in winter?

Winter nights are longer than a battery’s rated run time. The Solar Centre’s manual says it may be necessary in winter to override the automatic dawn switch-off, so the lights turn off after 6, 8 or 10 hours. That way you enjoy them on more evenings in a row.

Which timer setting should you use in December?

Timers count from when the lights turn on, which is around sunset or a little after. Using U.S. Naval Observatory sunset times for December 21, 2026, here is roughly when each setting would switch off:

Your lights may switch on somewhat after sunset, because the sensor waits for darkness. On that date, civil twilight ends 25 to 36 minutes after sunset in these four cities, so shift the times above later by up to half an hour.

A simple rule: start with the shortest setting that covers your evening. In the northern states, 6 hours or less is the safer choice. Move up to 8 hours if the lights still have charge left at the end of most nights.

What should a remote control do?

A remote is most useful when the panel and control button sit on a roof edge, gutter or high post. Features worth looking for:

• Timer buttons so you can change the setting without climbing a ladder.
• Brightness levels. Brightown’s meteor icicle lights offer 4 brightness levels. A lower level draws less power and stretches the charge.
• Mode selection. Eight modes is common, from twinkle to steady-on.
• Memory. Brightown’s crystal globe lights list a memory chip that saves the last mode, so you do not reset it daily.
• Infrared or radio. Environmental Lights’ remote-controlled adapter uses infrared, which needs a clear line of sight to the receiver. Check the manual for which type a set uses.

Checklist before you buy

1. The listing names the timer options in hours.
2. It says whether the timer repeats nightly or must be set each night.
3. The remote controls the timer, not only the lighting mode.
4. There is a memory function for the last mode and setting.
5. The panel is separate and adjustable, so you can place it for the winter sun.
6. The battery capacity and rated run time are stated.

Troubleshooting timers and remotes

If the timer seems to stop working, check whether you turned the lights off by hand. Environmental Lights says holding the button to switch off also cancels the timer. The Solar Centre also cancels timer mode when you switch the lights off manually.

If the remote does nothing, check its battery and point it straight at the receiver. If the lights themselves will not come on, the cause is usually the panel or battery, not the remote.
