Solar Christmas Lights Not Working? Causes and Fixes

Solar Christmas lights usually stop working for one of five reasons: the switch is off or a pull tab is still in, the panel is shaded or dirty, another light is shining on the sensor, the battery is worn out, or a wire has come loose. Check them in that order. Most fixes take minutes and cost nothing.

Each check below is ordered from quickest to slowest. If you get to the end and the set is still dark, the section on when to replace will help you decide whether it is worth a new battery or a new set.

How to fix solar Christmas lights, step by step

1. Check the switch and the pull tab

Festive Lights, a lighting retailer, lists this first: make sure the power is on. Many sets have a small switch on the back of the panel. New sets may also have a plastic pull tab on the battery that blocks it until removed.

2. Run the cover test

Cover the panel completely with your hand or a dark cloth. Gama Sonic and Festive Lights both recommend this test because it mimics night.

• Lights come on: the sensor, battery and LEDs work. The issue is charging or stray light. Go to steps 3 and 4.
• Lights stay off: the battery may be flat or worn, or a wire may be loose. Go to steps 5 and 6.

3. Move the panel into more sun

Gama Sonic’s support guide says its solar panels need direct sun for at least 2 to 3 hours a day. Winter makes this harder: the Department of Energy notes that Denver gets nearly three times more solar energy in June than in December, and thick cloud can block direct sunlight entirely. 4. Remove stray light and clean the panel

Gama Sonic warns that street lights, garage or house lights and neighbors’ lights shining on the photocell can keep a solar light from turning on. Shield the panel or move it.

Then clean it. Gama Sonic advises a slightly damp cloth with warm water only and no chemicals. After snow, EnergySage suggests dusting off the panel so sunlight gets through.

5. Check and recharge the battery

Open the battery compartment. Look for water, residue or corrosion on the contacts and for a leaking or damaged cell. Gama Sonic notes that water or residue can build up inside a lamp head, and says to contact support if you see liquid or damaged wiring.

If the battery looks clean, give the panel a full day in direct sun. EnergySage reports that brands recommend 8 to 12 hours of sun for a full charge. If the lights still run only briefly after that, Festive Lights and Gama Sonic both point to a worn battery as a common cause. 6. Inspect the wiring

Gama Sonic’s troubleshooting guide says to confirm all wires are connected, mainly between the solar panel and the control board. Follow the lead wire from the panel to the string. Look for cuts from mowers, pinches from staples and loose plugs at any connector.

The U.S. Fire Administration advises throwing away light strands with frayed or pinched wires. That advice applies to solar sets too.

When to replace instead of repair

Replace the set when:

• The panel is cracked, or its surface has turned cloudy
• Water has corroded the control board, not just the battery contacts
• Wires are frayed or pinched along the string
• The battery is sealed in and cannot be swapped

Repair is worth it when the battery is a standard size behind a screw door. Gama Sonic puts its solar light battery life at about 3 to 5 years (roughly 1,000 to 2,000 charge cycles), and a separate Gama Sonic maintenance article suggests replacing batteries every 2.5 to 3 years. A new battery is often the cheapest fix for a set that still charges but dies early.
